Resilience

Resilience- it means being able to bounce back and cope with difficult situations. It means being able to build your courage and overcome difficult situations no matter what.

Here’s an interesting thing that I learned recently - to compartmentalise. It’s a coping strategy that allows you to categorise things away and put them into different ‘compartments’ so you are able to fully focus on the matter at hand. It allows you to stop spending time worrying or dwelling, and focus only on what’s important in the present.

This concept has appeared to me before in a book called Eragon where the main character had to undergo severe prolonged stress and trauma and suffering. But before he became broken, he visualised himself locking the ‘core’ of himself - his name, his identity m, his memories- and safely stowing it away in a drawer, knowing that he would reopen that drawer one day and his core would be completely unharmed and untouched.

And then he did what he needed to in order to survive the situation. He could barely understand things at the end but once he was freed from the situation, he reclaimed himself. And everything that was good and whole - burst forth.

And that is what the power of the mind does. My friend Fadz does the same, she tells her mind firmly that she will not let herself feel sad and cry because of work. She told herself that she would not let her friendship fallout affect her. And she turned her attention on to something else and put that part aside for as long as she needed.

And she is able to reason herself throughly and be prepared. And as a result, be able to face anything and everything and still keep going with minimal impact. I find all this pretty inspiring.

Sure, it is natural that you would want to keep a bit of distance with a particular person whom you believe have caused your pain. However, try not to close your heart during the healing period, try to open your heart, loving yourself a hundred percent, doing things that make you happy. When you feel calmed down again, you can initiate an open and honest heart to heart talk with this person, without holding grudges, or you may have already been able to move on, and I congratulate you for your growth.
Actually, all miseries in life are just illusions created by the mind, all experiences in life are here to help you grow and evolve. Perhaps at this stage of your life, you think you cannot live without this person, or you would only ever love/marry this person, but the law of the Universe is that we can always move on with or without a particular person. The earth will keep spinning regardless; the sun will keep rising and the moon will also still be on the beautiful night sky.
And do not forget that we are just little creatures living in a little tiny planet called Mother Earth, and the earth is just a tiny planet in this tiny galaxy called Milky Way out of at least one billion galaxies in the observable Universe!! So how can anything be such a big a deal in life?
So wake up and do not get trapped in trivial matters in life (that is, pretty much all matters that cause you pain). In a world that is full of suffering and pain, we really need to have more open hearts, so keep your heart open, shine, keep spreading the love (to whomsoever concerns) and keep dancing, never forget that life is celebration — to be alive is a divine gift!
Never forget that the source of love is from within, the source of love is YOU. Be the light and keep spreading more love to the Universe.

Change is the only constant in life

'Change is the only constant in life'- Heraclitus (Greek Philosopher)

Today, I turn 27. This year has been perhaps, in no small exaggeration, the most difficult by far. The word difficult here isn't really a negative connotation. This year, a lot of things in my life started to break away from the normal patterns, the honeycomb of comfort zone which I am so used to. It build up like little cracks in the ground, until everything started to shake and the tectonic plates shifted, displacing everything I have ever known.

I realise that I have become stuck in my habits and not adapting to the changing times. In Taylor's lyrics (Lover album), there is a line that goes 'We say that we'll just screw it up in these trying times. We're not trying'.

I guess if you take these lyrics at face value, it simply means that if you don't try in trying times, then you'll just screw it up. Because for those who are really trying, when the times get tough, the tough get going. So it has come to a point that I can no longer really hide or supress my true self- it has been open to all to see- all who know me, whether they love me or not- my true nature has surfaced to the open, right from my core. No longer painting pretty pictures, things are real this time.

If I were being honest, I miss halcyon days- aka student life. Simply because it was so carefree. Not a worry in the world. Even when I started worrying, it was because I really wanted to find a soulmate. Someone who completes me. Now I learnt that there is no such thing. You have to be complete and contented with your life, regardless of whether someone comes along. Your life is yours to lead, build, create; and your values, dream, and goals, are yours to cultivate. The partner is lucky to be able to share your life; and you theirs. But everything is whole on its own. I have to be able to stand on my own two feet.

If you had asked the 22 year old me, where do you see yourself in five years' time? The now 27 year old me would say - certainly not like this. So broken. So sad. Yet so full of hope for good things to come, for magic to happen.

I learned it, not in the easiest way, that for good things to happen, you have to take care of what you have right now. And do it justice. Sort out the baggage and bad habits (take out the trash). Amplify the good and see other people for their sufferings or their unique needs.

It was a huge relief when after I did a brainwave EQ test that I found out that I am anxious and afraid to fail (though my older brother heard me say 'warrior':). I know now that my energy should not go into worrying about the future, but taking steps instead to make sure I bring my best today. My efforts today and bringing my best self out in the present would definitely set a strong footing or mindset which would prove helpful for the future, no matter what challenges I have to weather.

An honest conversation with Dad today revealed a great depth of things which he would have never told me otherwise. That he always loved and protected his children, no matter how much he had to sacrifice. Even when he felt that he was unloved, uncared for, and carrying the burden alone, he still chugged on because he truly loved us.

Inside, he was dying for us to show a bit of care (to help him out with the chores), he always defended us when relatives called us 'self centered' or 'lazy', but he did feel very sad and very tired why we couldn't bother to lift our finger to help him, or care for him, when he worked day and night, and provided for the entire family through his blood, sweat and tears. When Dad poured his heart out, I felt kind of surprised. I've always thought that breadwinners don't need looking after, but I was wrong. After a long hard day, you'd expect the people who love you, who you had raised and taken care of and defended since young to adults, would actually show some empathy too.

I've always been living in my own world, expecting others to protect and care for me. Whether they are family, friends, acquaintances, I have always wanted others to understand me and put me first. I've seldom returned the gesture unless I am trying to impress someone. But once I have 'won them over' and the 'need to impress' lessens over time, I stop whatever I was doing and then start demanding again (without giving back too).

With awareness, comes realisation. And with realisation, comes change. 5 years. 22 year old me was only just graduating, full of joy and hope. Wondering what the big world (after student life) has to offer. There was certainly some teething problems when entering the workforce, but now seeing everyone making their days count, I also look forward to make each day of mine count.

Now, I'm 27, I can still make it count. Why let dust mites and chaos win? When all these things can be taken care of?

3 birthday resolutions:
B. reathe (Do daily breathing exercises- alternate nostril breathing, expelling breath, cooling breath)
B. log (Do daily check-ins through writing to express emotions, thoughts, reflections)
C. lean (Start by tidying clothes and declutter ocassionally

Birthday note:

Dear Joanne,

Hey! Happy Birthday girl! I know times are trying but hang in there beautiful! As long as your heart is in the right place, your mind will follow:)

Don't worry yourself silly too much about things that you can't change (a.k.a. other people *wink wink) or things that have already happened (even storybook characters learn to leave their tragic past behind them to shape new lives- a.k.a. Harry Potter *wink *wink)!

Do you know that as a Scorpio, death and rebirth is your realm? I kid you not, it is said that Scorpios are even immortal! Haha:) But on a more realistic note, here is what it says about your supernatural power! :)

Our ego enables us to navigate our earthly life. Yet there comes a time when the ego and physical form we identify with must die. Death is but one stage in the cycle of reincarnation. In this cycle, our spirit climbs upward in an ever-expanding spiral, similar to the kundalini force surging up the spine during awakening.

Just as a snake sheds its skin, we need to periodically shed parts of ourselves so we can spitually transform and regenerate anew. Scorpio asks us to venture into the deepest parts of our subconscious, and experience the 'death' of our ego-identified self so we can become transformed and experience rebirth. This is how we evolve at the soul level.

Also, just think of all the things that you do as things that EMPOWER yourself. That's right! Empowering, like girl power! Like Powerpuff Girls! Haha:) Well, it's true that the things and responsibilities that falls on your shoulders might be tougher, but it all comes back to you! Upskilling yourself to a whole new level! :) You can finally do some tough, big girl things without relying too much on others. You are obtaining new powers girl! :) Do some good with it and care for yourself too! And the love will simply overflow to others as well. I really do believe it:)

Hit pause, slow down and enjoy life as many times as you want:) Yes, it's important to smell the roses even when you're working hard to build a garden. Soon, you'll be able to harvest the fruits of your own labours. And no one, NO ONE in the world, can take your skills and knowledge away from you. Isn't that incredible! :) And the good news is, sharing is caring! Once you master those, you can even pass on the skills to others, or simply use it for goodness and kindness to make someone's life have an even bigger, brighter sunshine.

So keep smiling, keep those breathing exercises handy and write in as often as you want to:) Make it a motto to keep things neat too in the long run because clutter ain't pretty:) Have fun always and just be yourself, but your best self with the right foot forward! You can do it, I believe in you and I can't wait to grow into your skin, and heal in the most beautiful way, making sense of this bizzare, incredible, extraordinary ordinary life. Balance, peace, harmony, love always.

-XOXO
27 y/o Joanne to my present day self:)

Soul Searching Complete

Finally, my soul searching has bore fruit! The journey started unconsciously of course. You know the age old question of ‘What keeps you up at night?’. Well, mine is not knowing who I am and what I want in life. And becoming really insecure seeing everyone else live out their big dreams and aspirations. My close friends think I worry and think ahead too much! When I freaked out about the image consultant trainer’s advice to ‘always have a strategy in life and how you approach everything you do’, I consulted Alice and she told me to relax. That living peacefully and taking care of yourself is more than enough on one’s plate. And that most people are simply living their day-to-day life without planning ahead.

In some teachings, it is said that the greatest thing you can do is to ‘live in the moment’. Because a moment only happens at that time. Specifically that one time, that one moment which you experience it live. Yet our mind sometimes skip ahead and think of what’s next when it hasn’t yet arrived. Yet other teachings, advice us to always have a strategy and battle plan ready. Shall you be called to war all of a sudden, you already have your battle plan ready.

What I personally arrived at, after a long time of obsessing, is that we will go through life in phases and stages. When we were younger, it was very distinct- kindergarten to primary school, secondary school etc. However, thanks to analysing one of my life’s biggest inspirations, Taylor Swift, I know that our phases aren’t just defined by age and our schedules. It is defined by the things we love, our emotions, our experiences of experiencing anything major or minor, big or small, significant or insignificant, and how we feel throughout as well as how we deal with the aftermath.

Through her albums, you can definitely see how her experiences with various things have affected her and how she has matured to handle conflicts and drama, and even matured enough to put an end to friendship feuds and have courage to bury the hatred and trust again. It just goes to show that without a care, Taylor has always done what she wanted without worrying about what people would say, not caring about the public perception when she’s dating a boyfriend or breaking up with a boyfriend, she just does what she wants because she feels it is right. And not feeling the need to justify to anyone, receive public praise, approval or think herself worthy of the attention. The way she lives is truly fearless.

And even when dealing with some repercussions of what she happened to become involved with, she managed to rise gracefully above the noise and prove that she is not someone who will give up on herself. I’m so happy that she’s in love again and hoping that, as she said in her album notes, that this person deserves her, and in turn she will treat the person with care, as that person is someone who is willing to make sense of her crazy world.

My personal quest is now complete. The first part at least:) I have finally come to a conclusion. Hurray! Yay, me!

From here on, I have established my personal branding. Everything I do in life from here on will fit into these 3 pillars (because 3 is a good number!:).

LEARN. LAUGH. LOVE.

LEARN.
The unexamined life is not worth living- Socrates
Creating a ‘school’ environment! I realise what is missing in life is the fact that we shouldn’t stop learning once we leave school! We all learn subjects, excel at some and then do poorly at others, but nothing is a zero, as long as there is effort made, there is progress! The thing to do is to pursue knowledge and continue learning, reflecting and learning, and it’s okay to fail and make mistakes along the way! Better to have failed than to have never tried at all, right? :) Align learning to interest to make it fun! No subject is truly dull or arduous, only the way it is presented or taught:)

LAUGH
Laugher is the best medicine.
Look at the bright side of things. Cheer up! :) Believe in good and always give the benefit of the doubt (meaning doubt less and trust more!:) Joy and humour. Infuse your mind with positive thoughts.

LOVE
Serve each other humbly in love.
One teaching says that we are all visitors on Earth, and will soon depart when the time is up. Use your existence on Earth to do good by spreading love and kindness to everyone. Treat everyone with care, especially the ones closest to your heart and never take anything they do or the person themselves for granted. Remember, the person might not always be with you (everyone’s time is short on Earth!) and even if they are with you for what feels like an eternity, they don’t owe you anything. It is up to you to show them the path of kindness as kindness brings about more kindness (the cycle of giving and receiving love).

Enchanted moments

Paying tribute to all the moments you cheered me up, amused me and brought that wondrous ‘wow wow factor’ back.

(Nov 2019)- When you showed me on your phone that you would drive crazy distance at crazy hours. 28 km. 3 am. 4 am. And then I Googled Map, and realised that from my home to Aloft, is only 24km. Still another 24 km (home-Aloft distance) plus another 4 km= 28 km. Almost 30km like how I drove from home-PWTC. Crazy distance at crazy hours after crazy day at work. And even gig. You said you can't do it everyday and I know how tiring it is. (I took off on the next morning usually, or wake up super late:)

(Oct 2019)- When you immediately poured and mixed an unknown substance into your drink:) Because I tasted it and said it was sugar:)

When you wanted to bring me out on a date “Lover album surprise” and I was thinking of whether to wash my hair for the outing or not:)

When I said out loud ‘when you jiggled my thighs’ and stopped people in their tracks and they all turn around:)

(Dec 2018) - When you thought I made condoms:) I offered you a hint on one of your gifts that ‘I made it myself and it’s small enough to fit in your wallet and carry around anywhere’:)

(2018 & 2019) - When staff at the hospital and hotel staff referred to you as my husband:)

Lover

Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close?

Thank you for keeping me company and taking care of me while I was sick, bored and tired.

Thank you for buying me water (even before I could ask) and remembering that I needed small change for the parking.

Thank you for defying my expectations of just eating supper and actually going out for a movie date randomly (unplanned) and paying for everything (my RM10 hot chocolate and the movie ticket).

Thank you for surprising me with the Taylor Lover party, and buying the CD for me. Not to mention taking all my photos patiently even though I don’t even know how to pose. And sacrificing your family day (Sunday) for me and coming out during the daytime.

You have really proven that you paid attention to my needs and wants, my likes and my desires. And you are doing everything you can to keep me satisfied despite your insane working schedule and workload (reaching home at 3.30 A.M. and waking up again at 8 A.M. for work) and lack of sleep.

I know that I can sometimes live in love and happiness but not be aware of it. I conclude that the best thing I can do for us is to let you be yourself, support your passions in life and be there for you.

I am loved by you and I want to love you right and do right by you. Let us always treasure each other through life’s up and downs, the exciting and the mundane, the achievements and the failures, the celebrations and the conflict.

Let’s see everything through together always.

Behind Closed Doors

Take two steps back
Stumble and fall
That's what it means
To be human

Should I see your true face
Or see you behind a mask
Which one is more painful
You decide because I can't ask

Behind closed doors
You can be who you really are
With sorrows and woes
There is no right or wrong
Only beginnings and endings

This place is our home
It’s where we belong
So it's alright
Let those tears fall
Let those fears show
Let that anger go
Takes more than that to drive me away

Cause I have been there before
I took those steps first
We all know betrayal hurts
When fights turn into battle storms
Everything’s pitch black and cold
Even then I knew you loved me

Behind closed doors
Baby you can go and rage on
I’d rather not have stone cold silence
There is no right or wrong
Only beginnings and endings

But there is no chance we’re drifting apart
Cause to the ends of Earth we’re destined to last
I know in the end all we need is trust
